Although is hasn't felt like it lately, winter is here and with the crisp morning air and icy evenings comes the recognition that the simple daily walk may not be quite so simple for a while! Icy paths, gusty winds, raindrops, even snow may stand in the way of regular exercise – especially for those of us “not quite so young as others”!
We all know that any type of exercise is what keeps our energy levels stable, our bodies healthier, our stress levels lower …. The list seems almost endless. A walk is the simplest, most cost effective form during spring and summer but as winter approaches that prospect does carry some potential risks. A simple misstep on an icy patch, a hitch in balance and the results can be far from simple. So what other options are available?
Gyms offer treadmills and elipticals, organized exercise classes, personal trainers and often even jacuzzis and steam rooms. Unfortunately they can also carry a somewhat significant cost of membership – especially for those on a limited budget. And let’s be honest here, many of us don’t enjoy the prospect of time spent in an overcrowded gym!
Walks will always be an excellent choice, for any age level, but as mentioned above, weather may stand in the way of consistent participation. It would be wise to consider making what may have been a solitary pleasure into one that is enjoyed with a partner simply for safety’s sake.
Whole Body Vibration (WBV) is an exercise option recently growing in popularity, that may be the perfect alternative choice. Ten minutes of focused exercise on a Vibration Platform offers a variety of health benefits including improved balance and stability, increased muscle strength and joint mobility. Studies have even shown that 12 months of 10 minutes, 3 days a week following specific protocols on a vibration platform results in increased bone density!
Whole Body Vibration exercise studios are springing up across the nation as people looking for big results from a small time commitment are taking advantage of this unique exercise option. From the young to the elderly, the fit to the beginner this form of exercise offers benefits to all – either as a stand alone fitness tool or as an added portion of an already vigorous routine. Memberships are generally monthly and often include a Body Composition Analysis (used to track your progress), use of a Far Infrared Sauna, and more.
Owning your own WBV Platform and having easy access on your own schedule is another option but be very careful before purchasing. There is a wide variety of price points and machine quality. In order to obtain the advantages listed above with just 3 short 10 minute workouts per week, requires a minimum power output of 15Hz . Most lower, bargain priced machines don’t meet the specifications necessary to achieve that but make the claims anyway. Buyer beware – shop carefully!
Exercise is important. As we age it becomes even more crucial that we keep moving and keep exercising but we must be wise in the choices we make in achieving that. If you have the gym membership – USE IT! If you have a walking buddy – keep logging in those miles! If you’d like to check out the advantages of WBV and the health benefits it offers, find a WBV Studio near you to see if it’s a fit before jumping in and purchasing one.
Remember – good health is our most precious treasure. Guard it, nurture it, and the rewards for you and your family will be priceless.
